Spring Fashion

So a bit ago I did a blog on Fall 2010 fashion. It is now Fall Fashion Week New York for 2011, and also that time that fashion magazines give advice on Spring fashion. And all I have to say about spring is ugh.
I am not impressed by this spring's fashion and will be mostly pretending that it does not exist. Let me tell you first what I do not like about the spring trends, and then I will move on to what little I do like.
First off is 70's glamour.

Yeah, this is so not going to happen with me. Some people might look good in the retro look, and they are probably banking on it not being something that most fashion buyers would have worn in their lifetime. But I never liked the look, and still do not.








Biker fashion. This one is also mostly not coming near me. Most of what I have seen from the runways and in the magazines look too 80's, like this years designers could not figure out what decade they were in. I like biker jackets that have been around for awhile now, but I do not like “biker fashion” as it has been presented.

Maxi dresses/sheer maxi dresses. Really? Only a few people can really pull off the maxi dress and not end up looking pregnant, and now they are making them shear? This just confuses me.

Crochet and macrame. I knit, I do not crochet. Why? Because I do not like the look of crochet clothing. Blankets maybe, but standard crochet, not really. This trend is tied up with the 70's look, but keeps getting separated into its own category of eh. I just do not like the look, a bit to hippy for my taste, somehow mixes with a touch of granny.



Tassels. Just....ick. On handbags sure, not on my clothes please. I am not a window curtain.

Jumpsuits. This is a look that just will not seem to die on the runway. Just go away, I am not a toddler, I like separate tops from my pants.

Now for things I like:

Punk fashion is coming back somewhat. It is taking last falls glamour goth to a more punky edge. However they keep mixing it with the 70's glamour so the jury is still out on this.

Lace clothing. This can be very pretty if done right, but the problem is I have yet to see it done right. I know that lace can be very fashionable, but with what I am seeing now, it is just ways to make really weird tan lines.
Wide leg pants. I love them being a rather tall girl. They really balance out my height and hips. But this is only if they stay away from the bell bottom look that it can stray into. This needs to be avoided at all cost. More of that dang 70's just out to haunt me. I have seen some really amazing looks with wide leg jeans, in dark colors though. In light it is just a bit weird.

One another note, making progress on my getting fit. Though the counter at the bottom of the page does not show that because I am still technically above what it sees as my starting weight, and it does not do negatives. But I am working on it. I really am!

Falling into Fall Fashion

I follow the fashion world as much as I can, I am not so interested as some as to know the names of many models, or more than a few major designers. However I still watch the trends and styles with interest. This fall's line up is very fun and interesting and I am looking forward to adding to my wardrobe.

I am just a very poor student, (you don't get paid to student teach) so I usually get cheap styles from Old Navy or Target, and sew or knit up other interesting items. Goodwill is also a great place to find items to tailor, and with the renewal of some styles, you can find some great things there.

Some of my favorite trends for this fall include Chunky Knits obviously. I love knitting and knitwear so this makes me very excited for the items that I can make. I do not think I would buy many, I prefer to knit them myself.

The Camel Color is fun, very neutral and looks great with everything else.

I really like the Lower Hemlines, as well as the Fuller Skirts. These are very reminiscent of the 50's and popularized by Mad Men. It also helps that the models used to showcase these looks are more curvey and more real on top. Not every woman looks like that, and there are beautiful women who are thin or small on top. However the stick models cause many body issues with young girls and admittedly even women, so it is a good change to have more wiggly looking bodies walking down the runway.

The more classic and simple looks are great, and something that can be invested into without worry about passing trends. Classic white button ups, basic shapes of bags, and simple lines and pants. And my favorite; Vests!

I have always loved vests. However they come and go in the fashion world so some years it can be very hard to find them. I have found some great looking sewing patterns for them that I am thinking of buying. I also like to knit them. I am a great knitter, but my sewing skills are not amazing. I can sew, but just not at a high quality. I really would like to be able to sew tailored bodices and corsets, but first I need better machinery (sewing machine and serger). But one day I plan on having a crafting room outfitted with such items and then lots of my clothes will be homemade.

Now two trends from the fall fashion magazines I am not so keen on are Leopard Prints and Glamour Goths. I just have never gotten my mind around the idea of leopard print, not even in small amounts. It can look good on some people, but on me. I have just never taken to the idea. And Rule One of fashion is never wear what you are not comfortable in. The best fashions are the ones you can wear that make you feel sexy and alive, comfortable and most of all, you. And leopard print is just not me.

And the very idea of glamour goth is just a little weird. I like one or two pieces of black lace, a studded belt, a black flowing skirt, but all together... not so much. It is just a little creepy, and I cannot see where you could wear it. I certainly could not get away with it at school, or out on State Street. So really, this does not seem like a Midwest kind of thing.

On a separate note, I really like an off runway style know as Steampunk. And I enjoy it when the runway provides clothes that can fit into a more day to day steampunk. Last season had a lot of studded military clothes, which has simplified itself into the fall. This season has vests and longer skirts with corseted items. However I do not think the bustle will come back on the runway anytime soon, but one can wish.

On another separate note, yesterday at work I was in the bathroom and turned to the mirror, and had a very interesting experience. It is hard to explain, but I saw me. It was like every time I looked in the mirror the last month or so, I did not see me, but now I did. It was recognition I felt, very homey and comforting. I also in the same time thought “I look like my mom, AHHHHH!! okay.” But that is okay because my mom is very pretty. But it was all together a very interesting experience.
